Like the Israelites in Egypt, they wanted me to leave. Then, they wanted me to stay. By force.
Fools say: “But you were in China for so long.”
The wise understand that: “Revolutions promise drama, but change comes in the detail.” That in fact, I'd been trying to leave China since 2006. Further, that, one's inability to intellectually metabolize detail, is their own problem.
It was war, hell, and high water, in China. But, by God, I overcame it, where so many others failed, with the help and intercession of angels and people whose names are written in the Book of Heaven.
Racism, xenophobia, harassment, betrayal, indignity, Chinese Communist Party politics, oppression, and the consequences of the dark art of economic statecraft tested, thwarted, and forced me to constantly tweak and elevate my best laid plans, strategy execution IQ, resilience, and resolve. Daily.
Both before 2019, when I unwittingly strategically returned only to be trapped by COVID-19, and the battle to exit.
Once again, fools say: “But he/[you] returned.” The wise, aware they neither have all the answers nor know everything, ASK. Then, meticulously and genuinely seek to understand, through active engagement.
One of my best Chinese friends took one grim look at flight availability back in May and June 2020 and reconciling her limited Chinese data with rumors from Chinese social media, confidently declared: “You can forget about getting out of China until at least October.”
Well, it took ruthlessly irrepressible creativity and indomitable resolve to render that prediction inapplicable, and survive the final battle of Beijing.
But in the end, The Lion of Judah prevailed. (Revelation 5:5 & Genesis 49:9 | More here)
I was already trying to leave, but became more disgusted when I discovered the morally depraved Chinese Communist Part (CCP) was determined to use the Coronavirus pandemic to rob expats.
If you had a 10-year or any other visa that required exit and entry every 30, 60, or so days, it didn't matter anymore with the borders closed. You'd find out the hard way after roaming buildings, speaking to uninformed customs officials at various checkpoints and local Exit & Entry Administration buildings who tld you different things, that the ultimate solution in fact was to go pay money at the PSB (Public Security Bureau), — in order to avoid breaking the “law” by applying for their fake COVID-19 “extension” visa. Bribe, to be more precise.
So, out of time, I grudgingly dragged myself through the process, paid (by an angel) and got a 55-day extension.
Then, having run out of time trying and failing to leave China 55-days later, I had no choice but return to that horrible building with rude employees — where like most CCP buildings these days, employees routinely randomly use their smartphones to take photos of patrons without their consent, for whatever reason, and despite the ubiquity of invasive facial recognition CCTV cameras — to enrich them some more by applying for another extension, this time set set to expire on September 13, 2020.
As before, I vowed never to return there. Except, this time — the preponderance of toxic neighbors, general negativity and unfriendliness of locals, deception, disrespect, indifference, indignity, wickedness, and betrayal of Chinese I once considered best, or trusted friends, as well as my own self-imposed arrest conditions, consequent lack of progress and vibrancy meant — with, maximum resolve, I had to bite the bullet.
Attempting to book tickets (paid by an angel) and having them disappear on you at the last minute just as one is about to pay for them; credit cards (with money) being inexplicably refused at the point of sale online, dynamically cancelled flights (in my case up to the last 16 hours before departure) and countless other CCP-engineered hurdles and disasters understandably took its toll. Especially, by late July.
So after two trusted friends working to help me leave China inexplicably disappeared and went dark (i.e., abruptly stopped communicating), I launched Operation Liberté: Jaguar Strike 002, an extension of (my) 2020 Theme: JaguarsOnly.
If you've been trying in vain to leave China, you'd be wise to avoid all Hong Kong and Shanghai transit flights.
That doesn't completely keep you out of CCP tentacles though. However, your goal should be a flight plan that quickly allows you to slip out of both China and Chinese airspace, as the CCP has so infiltrate businesses that, particularly, if you carry the passport of a nation currently in any tense foreign relations standoff with the CCP, you'll quickly become a target and pawn. Which is precisely hat happened in Beijing.
Prior to Check-in, not only were "charging points" not working but virtually not a single electric socket available in this now "ghost airport" which used to be among China's busiest, worked.
Prior to Check-in, not only were "charging points" not working but virtually not a single electric socket available in this now "ghost airport" which used to be among China's busiest, worked.
Except one at a nearby terminal.
When I finally found the one Charging Point (and watched others try and walk away exasperated because only 2 were functional), the hoops required to get free Wi-Fi, before even worrying about Wi-Fi security, made it pointless to proceed.
By this time, even my knees were hurting from the last several years' toll of standing for too long while working, constant sleep deprivation while strategizing Operation Liberté, and transporting my heavy luggage via subway and bus since commencing my journey back in Shenzhen.
Now in Beijing, having turned themselves into UK Border Customs Agents and French Immigration Officers, the regime, like Pharoah determined to prevent the Israelite's exit, it turned out, had infiltrated Air France's CX (Customer Experience) at Check-in, — targeting
American and specific passport holders of interest. Under COVID-19 health security guises, of course.
I wasn't the only one. But by God, I led the rebellion, to ensure most boarded.
They questioned my motives for traveling. They suggested I was going to stay in France, when in fact I was just passing through (transit) for a few hours to London Heathrow, where I'd having already alerted UK Border Control of my trip.
They didn't believe me, until I showed them I'm a lawyer and asked them to google me and see my work. Security, legal, business and other reasons to avoid China, including if you're Black or simply from a minority background can be found by clicking or tapping below.
They tried to say I was going to London illegally, which was ignorant, childish, and stupid.
In fact, I entered and crossed UK Customs/Border Control (like a British citizen) without a single agent talking to me or stopping me, having passed their Facial Recognition checkpoint..
Saving face wasn't easy for them. But having quickly figured out what they were up to as they pulled innocent passengers aside from their check-in lines into a stagnant grim queue to groom them for a cancelled flight, I started causing a raucous, legally, politely, but very assertively an audibly challenging and questioning their process as inefficient and needlessly disruptive and disrespectful to Air France customers.
Inspired, a taller (male) Chinese student who found some comfort commiserating with me said: “This is China...This is what they do. I just want to go to school. And when you complain, they tell you, 'you wouldn't be where you are without the Party.' This is China.”
Having lost the brinkmanship game, every argument, and every attempt to outfox and outsmart me, as well as challenged them to google me after also disclosing — all of this unprecedented, given my security and privacy standards — that I'm a lawyer and showing my business cards, in the the end, they gave in, whereupon I was treated exceptionally well by Air France Check-in crew who quickly processed my excess baggage, which was considerably smaller than anything I'd seen that night, and assigned me the best seats for my Paris and London flights.
By this time though, the flight was almost 3 hours past departure time, with a handful more to board. But we weren't done.
Everything Security Check in at SZX didn't put me through, PEK Customs did. One ultra-paranoid, politically brainwashed and suspicious, if not racist officer took it upon himself to make me empty out, check, scan, and rescan every bag and item that was simply scanned back in SZX (Shenzhen International Airport), triggering even more delays.
Until I was the last but one passenger to board the delayed 02:30 plane, as others I helped passed by.
As I got off Air France in Paris an tasted freedom, a jovial French flight attendant who struck a rapport with me by playfully asking “do you have the password?” simply underscored my relief with the words: “We don't have these [gestapo] problems here in France.”
At the time of writing, I am breathing the sweet taste of freedom and fresh, crisp British air, having already taken my first state surveillance-free, quiet, nature and park walk (since years in self-imposed house arrest in China). In the company of real foxes. Not minders or spies.
And while I'm grateful to God to be surrounded by love, positivity and lots of great food, dignity and civility, you should click/tap above to get better informed, and raise awareness about China and relevant travel or strategic risks.
As my old blog is slowly migrated to this new platform, informative blogs like Reasons To Avoid China will go live so that the wise and teachable will know to avoid Xi Jinping's China at all costs, if they value their freedom, health, and self-determination.
Critically, my ordeal in 2020 alone has underscored the importance of developing an impenetrable fortress of mental and spiritual fortitude. And with excellence — defined as the demonstrated commitment to completion of goals — being the only metric that counts.
Despite the odds, naysayers, and daily obstacles, by God achieved my goal of leaving China so as to run toward my destiny. And hereafter, the private, top-secret components of Operation Liberté (2020) are on track to be achieved too.
